SHARONLEA ACTION GROUP

Background

The Suburb of Lower Sharonlea under the auspices of The Sharonlea Action Group (S.A.G.) has for the past 15 years worked tirelessly to create a safe and secure community. Various efforts such as establishing a residents’ committee, neighborhood watches, security patrols other crime prevention activities have been a priority.

The residents have successfully at their own cost, fenced off their suburb and assisted in establishing an independent security company, managed / owned by a previously disadvantaged community member. While these efforts have yielded significant results, such as job creation and an extremely low crime rate, the costs associated with initiating future projects and maintaining existing iinfrastructure is of concern.

SAG (Sharonlea Action Group)
A few dedicated residents, who saw a need to self-police their suburb due to the high rate of crime at the time, established SAG in 1999. The goal was to prevent, rather than react to incidents, which in most cases were violent. SAG is an independent body of individuals who are nominated, and voted for by the community each year, and who’s primary function is to serve the community through administrative and pro-active activities not limited to fund raising.
